Missing children | Joshlin Smith inspires search volunteers

CAPE TOWN – Activists from Mitchells Plain in Cape Town have launched a missing persons unit dubbed The Collective.

Fifty trained volunteers will work with police as additional support during searches.

Founders say the idea arose from the case of six-year-old Joshlin Smith who went missing in February.

They say they will not replace existing structures but rather aim to reduce the number of cold cases, in particular those of missing children.

The programme is self-funded but currently supported by the local government department and provincial emergency medical services, which trained the volunteers for a first aid course.

eNCA’s Nobesuthu Hejana reports.
