LAST month, a 12-year-old girl went missing for six days after leaving her home in the Makause informal settlement in Germiston, Ekurhuleni.

Her worried mum reported her missing at the Germiston Police Station on 7 June.

On 14 June, she received a call from a stranger who informed her that they had found her daughter and were bringing her home.

The girl was found dumped at the gate of her rented home in the Makause informal settlement. She appeared weak and struggled to walk.

“The people who dumped her made sure they disappeared before they were seen. She was weak and apparently drugged. She looked like blood was drained from her,” the mum said.

She said she immediately took the daughter to the Germiston Police Station, and due to her condition, she was admitted to hospital.

After spending five days in hospital, receiving blood transfusion, the girl regained consciousness and was able to recount her ordeal.

“She said she was taken from the gate by a woman but doesn’t remember the place she was taken to. She only remembers going towards Germiston as they left Makause,” the mum explained.

Initially reported as a missing person case, it was later changed to kidnapping.

Sangoma and community leader Daniel Letswalo indicated that the girl was kidnapped for ritual purposes.

“This is not the first case. A few years ago, another victim was kidnapped to be drained blood and after they did whatever they did with him, they dumped him in an informal settlement. Luckily, he survived,” Daniel said.

Community leaders have raised concern over strange occurrences in Makause and urged parents to be vigilant.

Captain Nelda Sekgobela confirmed that a missing person and kidnapping cases were opened at the Germiston Police Station, and investigations are ongoing.
