AFTER many years of boasting by top maskandi guitarists Mbuzeni Mkhize and Senzo “Umuntuyenziwa” Khanyile about their guitar skills, Mzansi will soon discover who truly is the best.

Known as the kingmakers, Mbuzeni plays lead guitar for maskandi star Mthandeni Manqele, while Umuntuyenziwa’s a former lead guitarist for another maskandi star, Khuzani Mpungose.

Mbuzeni and Umuntuyenziwa are set to go head-to-head with live performances at the Impucuzeko Maskandi Festival, which will be held at People’s Park in Durban on Saturday, 17 August.

This event marks the return of live performances at the festival after a break due to complaints from fans about the lengthy setup times for performances in previous years.

Umuntuyenziwa, also known as Unkulunkulu weziginci, confidently told Daily Sun that he plans to outperform Mbuzeni.

“In terms of playing guitars and performing, Mbuzeni still has much to learn from me, the god of guitars. I will be teaching him how to play it properly during my performance and bless him to play as well as I do,” he said.

Umuntuyenziwa, hailing from Nkandla in northern KZN, who recently hosted the Umuntuyenziwa Live Extravaganza featuring all live performances, expressed his excitement that live shows are returning to Impucuzeko.

“I prefer performing live over miming and understand that fans were frustrated with the previous delays caused by setup times,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mbuzeni Mkhize from Umkhomazi in southern KZN, told Daily Sun that he’s ready to demonstrate why he’s an internationally acclaimed guitarist.

“I will play my guitar and lift it to my head while playing to show him that he has much to learn from me,” he said.

Other musicians set to compete with live performances include Inkosi YamaGcokama vs Thwasa Lekhansela. Only four musicians will perform live, while others will mime and perform with backtracks.

Their showdown will symbolise a battle across the Umkhomazi river against the uThukela river.
