Actress and singer Nomzamo ‘Zamo’ Dlamini, who sings about black tax in her latest single.

WE have all heard people complain about being abused by their families when they start working.

This is what actress and singer, Nomzamo “Zamo” Dlamini is tackling with her latest single, Ayikho, which was released in July.

The 35-year-old eSwatini-born Joburg-based singer is known for playing Thandeka on SABC1’s Ingozi. 

She told Daily Sun the song was written by Mnqobi Yazo.

“I fell in love with the song when I heard it because it’s relatable in so many ways. It’s more a love story kind of storyline.

“In this case, someone who is tired of being played. It can also be someone fighting black tax or any other toxic relationship and taking their power back to say, whatever you want from me: ‘Ayikho’,” Zamo said.

She said she’s grateful even though it’s been a challenge to tackle music, acting and personal life.

“I honestly can’t say it’s easy, but by God’s grace I somehow make it work. I’m super-blessed to be surrounded by an amazing team that takes so much of the weight off.”

She said she loves everything she does.

“Music is my first love, yet all these other things that make me multifaceted are all connected and were discovered within the music space. But music opened those doors so it should remain number one,” she said.

The former Joyous Celebration singer said she knew she would because an artist when she was still in primary school.

“I knew I wanted to be on stage from the age of six, so when I got the chance to work with bab’Mbongeni Ngema in a theatre production, the acting door opened and I ran through it,” she said.

“There were people who helped me in the industry. I’m so grateful to the destiny helpers whom I came in contact with.”
