Fire destroys healthcare facilities in Eastern Cape

JOHANNESBURG – At least 40 healthcare workers in Flagstaff, Eastern Cape, have had to seek temporary shelter after suspected veld fires destroyed staff accommodation at the Holy Cross Hospital as well as the Dutywa Community Health Centre.

Buildings at the Holy Cross Hospital caught alight, leaving some workers with only the clothes on their backs.

The provincial department of health is making arrangements to accommodate the affected workers.

While the facility remains open, patients have been transferred to Butterworth Hospital.

The Dutywa Community Health Centre was burned to the ground.

No fatalities or injuries have been reported.
