A group of suspects escaped with an undisclosed amount of money following a cash-in-transit robbery in Kagiso, Krugersdorp in Gauteng, on Saturday morning.
The money truck was bombed and robbed in broad daylight. Witnesses described a chaotic scene where a Mercedes-Benz collided with the cash van, triggering an explosion.
The collision caused the Mercedes to burst into flames.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said the suspects opened fire on an officer in the vicinity, damaging their vehicle.
“Kagiso police have opened a cash-in-transit robbery docket following today’s incident. Investigations are ongoing,” said Kweza.
