It took Cameroonian marine scientist, Dr Aristide Kamla, two months to spot his first African manatee in 2008, and only because a local fisherman at Lake Osso showed him what to look for.

But it was a moment that made him realise that protecting aquatic ecosystems was essential if we hoped to stem the decline in biodiversity the world was currently facing.
