Several teachers were robbed of their personal belongings at a primary school in eThekwini on Tuesday.Teachers at Mukelani Primary School in KwaMashu were also forced to transfer money from their bank accounts to the robbers.Local education officials have condemned the incident and urged members of the public to assist with investigations.A group of teachers from KwaZulu-Natal have been traumatised after they were robbed of their personal belongings and forced to transfer money to criminals who stormed a school on Tuesday.
According to local education officials, the incident took place at the Mukelani Primary School in KwaMashu, under the Pinetown District in eThekwini.
The teachers were “accosted” and forced to transfer funds through their cell phones.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education said it was deeply concerned and saddened by the incident.
“The safety and security of our educators and learners are of paramount importance, and such acts of violence and intimidation are entirely unacceptable,” it said in a statement.
“The department is working closely with law enforcement authorities to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice swiftly.”
As a result of the incident, security measures are apparently being improved at Mukelani and other schools in the region.
KwaZulu-Natal Department Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka said: “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as more information becomes available. As a department, we strongly condemn these criminal acts, preying on soft targets, our educators, who are hard at work in moulding ideal citizens.”
Hlomuka urged members of the public with information pertaining to the incident to reach out to the police.
