A teenager on holiday from Finland narrowly escaped drowning in rip currents near the Touws River Lagoon mouth at Wilderness Beach on Wednesday when his 17-year-old cousin sprang into action to save him.
According to the National Sea Rescue Institute, the pair, both South Africans, live in Finland.
The NSRI Wilderness duty crew said they were called to the scene after receiving eyewitness reports of a drowning in progress.
