Several teachers at Mukelani Primary School in KwaMashu, eThekwini, were robbed of their personal belongings and coerced into transferring money from their bank accounts to the robbers. Local education officials have condemned the incident and called on the public to assist with the investigation. The group of teachers from KwaZulu-Natal has been left traumatised by this ordeal. Local education officials reported that the incident occurred at Mukelani Primary School, located in KwaMashu within the Pinetown District of eThekwini. The teachers were confronted and compelled to transfer money using their cell phones.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education expressed its deep concern and sadness over the incident. In a statement, it emphasized that the safety and security of educators and learners are of utmost importance, and such acts of violence and intimidation are completely unacceptable. The department is collaborating closely with law enforcement to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are swiftly brought to justice.
Following the incident, security measures are being enhanced at Mukelani and other schools in the region.
KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka stated, “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as more information becomes available. As a department, we strongly condemn these criminal acts that target our educators, who are dedicated to shaping ideal citizens.”
Hlomuka also urged the public to provide any information related to the incident to the police.
