HACKERS have targeted the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa.
This was revealed by the department on Saturday, 20 July, saying Hlabisa’s mobile phone was compromised by hackers.
“Unauthorised access to the minister’s phone has been used to send fraudulent messages soliciting money from contacts in his phone and possibly from other numbers not in his contact list,” read a statement from the department.
Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa has been targeted by hackers.
The statement further stated that the incident is of utmost concern as it jeopardises not only the minister’s personal security, but also exploits the trust of the public.
“COGTA urges the public to exercise extreme caution if they receive any communication purportedly from the minister soliciting financial assistance or any form of monetary contribution,” further read the statement.

The department said the minister’s office, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, is actively investigating the breach.
“Steps are being taken to secure the minister’s communication channels and to identify those responsible for this illegal activity. In the interim, COGTA encourages individuals with any information pertaining to this incident to promptly report it to law enforcement authorities,” they said.
