SELLO Machitje, the deputy director of the Department of Water and Sanitation, has been found dead.

The family identified the body as Machitje’s.

Gauteng police spokeswoman Colonel Noxolo Kweza confirmed the identification to Daily Sun on Friday, 19 July.

On the day of the incident, family spokesman Kgosi Makgorogo Sello reported that Machitje left his home at about 5pm for the Eastern Cape. Normally, he would call to confirm his arrival, but on that day, he didn’t, which caused concern among his wife and sister.

“He left his home at about 5pm that Monday for the Eastern Cape. Between 8pm and 9pm, his wife tried calling him, but his phone went unanswered,” Kgosi explained.

This prompted the family to report him missing at the local police station. Although they did not receive a case number, they were given an OB number, which was used by the tracker to locate the car.

The car was found roaming between Alexandra and Marlboro, north of Joburg, and was later discovered in Alexandra without Machitje. 

Arrest Colonel Kweza previously confirmed that police, along with private security, traced Machitje’s vehicle to Alexandra, where a 53-year-old suspect was bust for possession of a stolen and hijacked vehicle.

Possible Murder Charge With Machitje’s body being found, the SunTeam inquired whether the man would be charged with murder.

Kweza stated that the investigation is ongoing to establish a possible link between the suspect and the murder.

“The investigations are ongoing to link the person who was arrested for the possession of his vehicle and the murder itself,” she said.

Daily Sun attempted to reach out to the family for a comment, but Kgosi said they should call back in two hours as he was still in a meeting.
