RESIDENTS are still in shock after the discovery of a dead girl in their kasi.

A 16-year-old girl from Atteridgeville in Tshwane was found raped and murdered in the early hours of Sunday morning, 4 August, sparking widespread outrage and calls for urgent intervention from residents.

Community leader Paul Masilela described the scene where the victim’s body was found as unbearable to watch.

“Her body was discovered next to her home, with her hands tied behind her head, a severe wound. It was a horrific scene to witness,” Masilela said.

He said that it appeared as though the victim attempted to fight back during the incident, but the perpetrator struck her with a large rock.

“It looks as though while being raped, she tried to fight back, but the perpetrator pulled a large rock and hit her on the head,” Masilela said.

A resident, Mpiloentle Mazibuku, emphasized the urgent need for intervention in the escalating gender-based violence cases in Tshwane.

“The community tried to protect her dignity and covered her body, but most women were distraught that during a month when we celebrate women, they continue to be victims of abuse. It’s a very sad reality that needs urgent intervention. Women’s bodies are not respected, even in death.”

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that the Atteridgeville police are investigating a murder case after a 16-year-old girl was found dead at a squatter camp on Sunday, 4 August.

“At this stage, police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death; however, no arrests have been made yet,” he said.
