Snl24 | King Shaka reigns supreme!

Short musical animation film and book author Manzini Zungu is described as ‘disruptive’.

THE internationally acclaimed and award-winning musical animation film, uShaka Inkosi Yamakhosi, has been turned into a book.

This film about the Zulu nation founder, King Shaka, made its debut on international screens via Netflix a few years ago.

The book shares its title with the animation film, uShaka Inkosi Yamakhosi, which was created and directed by well-known businessman, Manzini Zungu.

Manzini expressed his desire to extend his storytelling reach into the world of literature following the significant success of his film. He aims for the book to achieve similar success in the literary landscape, particularly among children and the youth.

Manzini highlighted the importance of preserving African storytelling through literature and provided insights into the cultural impact of King Shaka.

“As Africans who own their identity, we must lead in telling our own stories and not depend on others to do so. African stories have always captivated the world, and this book aims to engage our children with a title figure who hails from the African soil,” he said.

Manzini shared his excitement about collaborating with the University of Joburg (UJ) to bring this vision to life.

“As a proudly South African and African multicultural and vibrant institute, the UJ and I share a common vision for the potential of African storytellers through educational and creative activism,” he added.

Manzini launched his book at Exclusive Books in Rosebank Mall on Thursday, 4 July.

Multi-award-winning artist Ndabo Zulu shared his experiences and musical insights gained from working on the film.

“Everything we’ve done throughout this project has been disruptive. Normally, films are often inspired by literature, but here, we have a book that originated from a film. This unconventional approach was largely driven by Manzini’s creative dynamism in controlling the narrative of how we tell this story,” Ndabo said.

The printed version of uShaka Inkosi Yamakhosi book is officially on sale at Exclusive Books for R182 a copy and also available in electronic and audio formats on Amazon, Google Books, and many more platforms in Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sesotho, and Setswana.
