Umntuyenziwa’s festival withdrawal sparks controversy.
MASKANDI star Senzo “Umntuyenziwa” Khanyile has pulled out from performing live during the top maskandi festival.
He denies that he withdrew because he fears the internationally acclaimed maskandi star, Mbuzeni Mkhize.
Umntuyenziwa, from Nkandla in KZN, said he pulled out from performing live during the festival due to some disappointments with the organisers.
He was scheduled to compete head-to-head with Mbuzeni at the Impucuzeko Maskandi Festival, which was to take place at People’s Park in Durban on Saturday, 17 August.
Umntuyenziwa, the former lead guitarist for maskandi star Khuzani Mpungose, said although he doesn’t want to do a miming performance, he’d rather do it during the festival if the organisers meet his demands.
Umntuyenziwa and Mbuzeni always brag that they’re the best lead guitar players, as both play lead guitars for their solo albums while also playing for others.
Mbuzeni is currently playing lead guitar for maskandi star Mthandeni Manqele and is the one who played on Mthandeni’s song, titled Paris.

Umntuyenziwa, also known as Unkulunkulu weziginci because of his talent for playing the guitar, told Daily Sun that it hurts him that he won’t perform live.
“I believe in performing live as I recently hosted my live festival called Umntuyenziwa Extravaganza in Joburg. I wanted to bring back the original maskandi tune, as we are known for live performances.
“I want to tell my fans in advance that I will no longer perform live as they expected, but it is not that I’m afraid of Mbuzeni. There are some disagreements with the organisers that I don’t want to mention,” he said.
Their battle with Mbuzeni was going to be a two-in-one because it would be a battle between Maskandi from across the uThukela River, which is Umntuyenziwa, and Maskandi from across Umkhomazi, which is Mbuzeni.
Umntuyenziwa said he wanted to show those from across uThukela that their guitar tune originated from across uThukela, as many of them play the tune of the late legendary Maskandi musician Phuzushukela Bhengu from Nkandla, who was the first musician to sing Maskandi music.
Daily Sun contacted Impucuzeko Maskandi Festival organiser Xolani Mcineka, but his phone rang unanswered.
