ALL hell broke loose in Jukulyn in Soshanguve Block R, Tshwane on Tuesday, 20 August.

This after a hail of bullets shattered the morning calm, claiming the life of an alleged notorious crime kingpin believed to be Obed Shumba, aka Notsi, in execution style.

Witnesses described the scene as “absolute pandemonium” as people ran for their lives, abandoning their cars and fleeing on foot.

The sound of gunfire sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many to wonder if they had just narrowly escaped death’s grasp.

According to witnesses, the incident occurred at about 11am.

“I was coming back from buying bread when I started hearing countless shots and people screaming and running for safety. I’ve never been so frightened in my life. Immediately after the gunfire stopped, I checked if I wasn’t shot,” said one witness.

She said she was so frightened that she urinated on herself and trampled on the bread she was carrying as she ran.

Obed was allegedly involved in various criminal activities, including drug dealing and stolen vehicle smuggling. There are also allegations that he was responsible for ensuring that stolen double cab vehicles were illegally taken outside the country.

Additionally, he was accused of being a headache to several businesspeople who refused to pay protection money for their businesses. However, these allegations haven’t been confirmed by the police.

Community leader Katlego Sepeng expressed frustration with the high crime rate in the area, stating that outsiders often come to commit crimes in their kasi.

“We often hear a lot of people say that Jukulyn’s corrupted by people who don’t live in it, and we agree because the dead man wasn’t living around the area. However, he was targeted here because of the nature of the dangerous and notorious areas,” Katlego said.

Social media users and friends have been posting tributes to Obed, showing his lavish lifestyle. Pictures of him pouring champagne and flaunting his wealth have been circulating online, with many users expressing condolences to his family.

Gauteng police spokesman Mavela Masondo confirmed that a murder case has been opened and that cops are searching for suspects.

“Police are appealing to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation or assist in the apprehension of the suspect/s to please call the nearest police station or call CrimeStop on 08600 10111,” Masondo said.

No arrests have been made yet.
