— Mamelodi Sundowns FC (@Masandawana) July 3, 2024Last month, the Siya crew reported that Sundowns’ board had been putting pressure on the 37-year-old to deliver on his mandate, namely the CAF Champions League, which has eluded the club for the last eight years since 2016.
“The decision of Mamelodi Sundowns was taken by the Board taking into account the objectives and expectations of the Club and was not the recommendation of any individual associated with the Club. Sundowns is deeply committed to the development and players. Coach Manqoba Mngqithi and the Technical Team will continue to lead and take control of the training and preparation of the players for the upcoming season,” the statement read in part.
As a sole head coach, Mokwena oversaw 58 matches in all competitions, losing just eight of those, while winning an impressive 38 matches. Meanwhile 12 games ended in a stalemate.
