Firefighters were dispatched to National District Hospital in Bloemfontein after a fire mysteriously broke out on Sunday.
ABOUT 83 patients were rescued at National District Hospital in Bloemfontein, Free State on Sunday, 7 July, after a fire broke out.
According to the provincial health department, the fire, whose cause is currently unknown, started outside the pediatric ward.
It caught the trees and spread to the first and second floors of the hospital.
Free State health department spokesman Mondli Mvambi said this led to smoke spreading throughout the hospital.
“The Hospital Disaster Plan was swiftly activated. Patients and staff were evacuated.

“Mangaung Metro Fire and Rescue Services with various EMS Services of State and Private were activated, and they responded swiftly to aid in the safe evacuation of patients,” he said.

Mvambi stated that emergency officials rescued 83 patients from the wards. Of these, 23 were transferred to Botshabelo District Hospital.
At the same time, the remaining 50 were temporarily moved to Gateway Clinic, from where they’re being taken to Universitas Academic Hospital and Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital.
“Patients are prioritised in line with the need for continuous care in terms of their various ailments. No fatalities or injuries as a result of the fire. All people inside the hospital were accounted for,” Mvambi said.
