LEGENDARY maskandi star Phuzekhemisi says he sometimes feels embarrassed by the behaviour of some of maskandi artists.

He said some artists don’t behave in a manner that protects the image of the genre.

Born Zibokwakhe Mnyandu from uMkomaas in the south of KZN, the 61-year-old said most of the time, the young generation of artists are a disgrace to maskandi.

“In our time, maskandi was highly respected. This was because of how we behaved. More than protecting our image as artists, we used to maintain the dignity of our music because we loved it.

“The young generation thinks fame is everything. You would find a famous singer speaking in an embarrassing manner. That’s unfortunate and sad,” said Phuzekhemisi.

The legend first released an album in 1989 titled Imbizo and another, Emaphalamende in 1993.

He said old maskandi artists were also controversial but in matters that encouraged public interest.

“We used to fight against apartheid and other things that violated people’s rights. We were not fighting each other,” he said.

Phuzekhemisi is part of a panel of judges for the maskandi talent show Ushuni Womhlaba which airs Sundays on SABC1.

The show searches for raw talent in Mzansi.

He’s on the panel with Big Zulu, Sho Madjozi and Msaki.

According to Phuzekhemisi, the show aims to also educate people about how the maskandi artists should behave in public and in the studio.

“We must reclaim the dignity of maskandi music. I know some artists make sure that the genre is respected.

“So, I’m happy to be part of the show to educate people on the importance of good behaviour. There’ll be only one winner, participants will learn a lot, and viewers will also learn a lot about maskandi,” he said.
