Snl24 | Riveiro passes another Pirates test

Jose Riveiro has jumped another hurdle in elongating his impressive stay at Orlando Pirates to three years.

Jose Riveiro will not have taken notice, but when he starts the clock and enters the new week, the Spaniard will have gone past another hurdle in his reign at Orlando Pirates.

Riveiro is in Spain on a pre-season camp with Pirates, which he will hope sharpens them up for a league-winning campaign.

The relevance of this weekend is that the Spaniard will surpass Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic in the ranks of standing the test of time in that volatile job.

Sredojevic has had the second-longest stay after Rudi Krol in the Pirates head coach job throughout the PSL era years.

The Serbian lasted 743 days in the job during his second spell at the club, doing so without winning any silverware.

Only Krol went further than that, lasting 1094 days.

The Dutchman was given all of three full seasons from 2008-11 and after failing to win silverware in his first two, he then lifted the treble in his third.

For all his success in his third year, which came with the expiry of his contract, he was given no renewal.

Fast-forward to 2024, Riveiro finally has it all written that he will also last three full seasons in charge after lifting four trophies in his first two.

The long list of coaches that have been at Pirates throughout the PSL era have battled to stay long even on occasions when they won silverware, proving just how difficult a job this one is.

Pirates has had a long list of coaches who had failed to last 12 months in the job, who include Ronald Mkandawire, Shuaibu Amodu, Jean-Yves Kerjean, Sredojevic (first spell), Bibey Mutombo, Owen Da Gama, Julio Leal, Augusto Palacios, Vladimir Vermezovic, Muhsin Ertugral, Kjell Jonevret and Rulani Mokwena.
