Snl24 | Whose Call Was It To Appoint Folz At Sundowns?

Social media has been a hive of activity for Mamelodi Sundowns supporters and the fraternity since the unveiling of Romain Folz as the new technical member at the league champions.

Sundowns confirmed the appointment of Folz on Monday, with the tactician having joined as an assistant coach in the first team to work alongside Manqoba Mngqithi and Steve Komphela, as well as goalkeeper coaches Wendell Robinson and Kennedy Mweene.

Folz, 34, was last in the PSL with AmaZulu where he held the role of head coach from October 2022 to April last year, before he was redeployed to the position of technical director.      

Prior to joining AmaZulu, Folz had a stint with Marumo Gallants in his first official PSL coaching job which officially started in July 2022, having previously worked in Botswana for Township Rollers. 

In a previous interview with Soccer Laduma in his role as Rollers CEO, Bennett Mamelodi lauded Folz for the team’s improvement, highlighting the tactician’s ‘impeccable credentials’ and ‘meticulous planning’, among other qualities possessed by the young coach.

Mngqithi, who is a long-serving coach at the Brazilians, rates Folz highly, which explains why the UEFA Pro License holder now finds himself assisting at the former African champions, according to close sources. 

“The main thing is for the team to hit the ground running taking into consideration the amount of work that needs to be done, and in a short period of time. That’s why coach Romain has been brought in to assist with his technical knowledge, and yes, the coach (Mngqithi) did play a role in it happening, although the recommendation still needed the approval of the club, of course,” said the source.
