— Jabulani Langa (@JabulaniL2023) August 15, 2024THE appointment of senior members of the Zulu royal house, who are disputing King Misuzulu’s throne to the team resolving succession disputes under KZN amakhosi, has raised many questions.

Prince Mbonisi, Prince Mathubesizwe, Prince Vulindlela, and Prince Mxolisi Zulu, who are publicly challenging Misuzulu and took him to court, were among nine members announced in the KZN team to resolve succession disputes.

They were announced by KZN Cogta MEC Reverand Thulasizwe Buthelezi on Thursday, 15 August, in Durban.

Buthelezi, who is also the Zulu monarch’s traditional prime minister, said the role of the team is to resolve succession disputes under amakhosi in KZN under the provincial Cogta.

One of the questions is how these princes can resolve the succession dispute while they failed to resolve their Zulu royal house internal dispute and still challenge Misuzulu in court.

The second question is whether their appointment and working closer to the Zulu traditional prime minister Buthelezi, who was appointed by King Misuzulu, means they are now making peace as the Zulu royal house.

Thirdly, as these princes took Misuzulu to court over the succession dispute, does it mean they’ll drop those cases?

In 2023, they won a court case when the North Gauteng High Court ruled that the recognition of King Misuzulu by President Cyril Ramaphosa was invalid and unlawful.

However, Ramaphosa appealed and said that while he appealed, Misuzulu remained the king.

Since the Zulu royal house succession dispute started in 2021, Prince Mbonisi lost many positions in the government, including representing King Misuzulu in the House of Traditional Leadership and losing a position as a researcher on anthropology for the Traditional Leadership Dispute and Claims Commission in KZN Cogta, headed by Buthelezi.

In the Zulu royal succession dispute, Prince Mbonisi, Prince Mathubesizwe, and Prince Vulindlela are backing Prince Buzabazi, while Prince Mxolisi is backing Prince Simakade.

Unfortunately, Buthelezi requested that no questions should be answered by him and the Zulu royal princes.

Buthelezi said the late King Zwelithini started a process where the royal family played a critical role in resolving disputes and fostering reconciliation where succession disputes arise.

“I wish to present the team from the royal family that comprises senior members who have worked for a long time with King Zwelithini doing this work.

“Their dedication to this crucial task will have a positive impact and restore peace and stability in the nation of amakhosi that have been torn apart by succession disputes. The KZN Traditional Leadership and Governance Act 5 of 2005 gives authority to the MEC for Cogta to oversee all matters pertaining to the institution of traditional leadership,” said Buthelezi.
